About Us
A Movement to Protect Childhood
Let Them Roam is a parent-led community working to delay smartphones until age 14 and social media until age 16.
We believe kids are meant to roam—outside, in nature, in neighborhoods, in imagination, and in friendship. Childhood should be filled with exploration, independence, creativity, and real-world connection—not constant notifications and endless scrolling.
Research increasingly shows that early access to smartphones and social media is linked to rising anxiety, depression, sleep disruption, and social isolation among young people. At the same time, time for play, independence, and face-to-face connection is disappearing behind screens.
Our solution is simple: collective action.
When families make this commitment together, the pressure lifts. Kids aren't the only ones without smartphones. Parents aren't navigating this alone. Communities can reset healthier norms—making it easier for kids to spend their time exploring and growing in the real world.
We're not anti-tech. We believe in thoughtful technology use, introduced at the right age and with the right boundaries.
Because kids were meant to roam—not scroll.

What you're thinking, answered.
Quick, practical answers about the pledge, devices, and what 'delay' actually looks like.
What does the pledge actually mean?
By signing the pledge, you're joining other Serenbe-area families in committing to delay smartphones until your child is 14 and social media until 16. It's a community agreement — not a legal contract. The goal is to create shared norms so no child feels like they're the only one without a phone.
What if my child needs a way to call or text?
Great question! Delaying smartphones doesn't mean delaying all communication. Many families use basic phones, watches with calling features, or other simple devices that let kids stay in touch without the distractions and risks of a full smartphone.
What if my child already has a phone or social media?
That's okay — you're still welcome here. Every family's journey is different, and there's no judgment. Signing the pledge can still help set new boundaries and connect you with other families working toward the same goals. It's never too late to make a change.
